Former Bulldogs linebacker Davin Bellamy receives USFL award

After a productive college career at Georgia, linebacker David Bellamy has carried that over to making plays in the pros. His efforts with the USFL’s New Orleans Breakers last week did not go unnoticed, leading to a big award following Week 1 of play.

The USFL named Bellamy its first-ever Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Breakers’ 23-17 victory over the Philadelphia Stars on Sunday. Bellamy, who plays defensive end for New Orleans, ended the game with 6 total tackles along with 3 sacks — all of which came in the first half.

The 27-year-old Bellamy responded to the award on social media, writing, “Player of the Week is awesome, but it’s truly a team award. Thankful for my interior DLINE for pushing the pocket, my inside LBs for getting us organized, and our DC for play calling that helped me succeed!”

Bellamy was a valuable defender during his time at Georgia. He racked up 135 tackles, 13 sacks and 24 tackles for loss from 2014-17, which included a 2017 senior season during which he had 34 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 5 sacks.

Bellamy was a key contributor on a 2017 Georgia defense that helped the Bulldogs win the SEC and advance all the way to the College Football Playoff title game. Bellamy forced a crucial fumble in Georgia’s road victory over Notre Dame during the regular season, and he gained real attention after the CFP semifinals game when he encouraged Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield to “humble yourself” following the epic double-overtime Rose Bowl.

Bellamy signed with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He spent four years in the NFL with two separate stints with the Texans as well as stints with the Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee Titans, San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers.

The Breakers drafted Bellamy in the second round of this year’s USFL draft. He was the first EDGE/defensive end off the board.

Bellamy is one of six former Georgia players in the USFL, the others being wide receivers Tyler Simmons (Houston Gamblers), defensive tackle Tony Johnson (New Jersey Generals), defensive tackle Michael Barnett (Philadelphia Stars), offensive tackle Tyler Catherine (Tampa Bay Bandits) and defensive tackle John Atkins (Tampa Bay Bandits).

Bellamy and the Breakers return to the field at 3 pm ET Sunday when they face the Tampa Bay Bandits.
