The tremendous popularity of demon slayer has earned its place as one of the most well-known and successful anime titles of the modern era. Stellar animation sequences paired with strong themes of love, hope and loss shown through entertaining characters that fans can’t help but get attached to only serve to elevate the original source material.
With two seasons and a movie, its no surprise that demon slayer‘s prominence led to a Season 3 announcement immediately following Season 2’s explosive finale. This new season will continue Tanjiro Kamado’s story through the “Swordsmith Village” arc which covers Chapters 100-127 in the manga. Though little is known about the third season, the few teasers that have been released do a phenomenal job of building anticipation in eager fans.
The Plot of Demon Slayer So Far
demon slayer takes place in a world where humanity is plagued by an immortal race of demons who lurk in the night and prey on humans as their food source. The story kicks off when the impoverished yet peaceful Kamado family is all but slaughtered by a demon in the middle of the night. The eldest child, Tanjiro, who was away for the night, arrives home to find his beloved family dead, except for his younger sister, Nezuko. However, Nezuko is far from safe as she’s been transformed into a demon herself.
As it turns out, the demon to attack the Kamado family was Muzan Kibutsuji, the Demon King. Desperate to turn his sister into a human again and avenge his dead family from her, Tanjiro resolves to become a Demon Slayer, training meticulously with Sakonji Urokodaki, an esteemed and retired member of the Demon Slayer Corps.
Along their journey, Tanjiro and Nezuko are joined by fellow Demon Slayers, Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira. Together, the group embarks on several missions with the goal of growing stronger, but Muzan is not one to sit still. The 12 Kizuki are a group of the most powerful demons in existence whose loyalty to Muzan is unmatched. Tanjiro has had a run-in with a few of these demons so far and knows first-hand the threat they pose to humanity — but he also recognizes that they are stepping stones on his path to defeat Muzan. With the assistance of the Hashiras, the strongest warriors in the Demon Slayer Corps, Tanjiro will stop at nothing to put an end to the Demon King and revive Nezuko.
What to Expect in Demon Slayer Season 3
As mentioned, Season 3 of demon slayer will adapt the manga’s “Swordsmith Village” arc. After battling Daki and Gyutaro — Upper Moon 6 — in Season 2, Tanjiro’s Nichirin sword, the only weapon effective against demons, needs serious repairs. Thus, he travels to the Swordsmith Village to seek the help of Hotaru Haganezuka, the swordsmith who’s made all of Tanjiro’s swords to date. However, as is the case with every demon slayer arc, enemies are never far behind.
While the Hashiras were all shown briefly during a meeting that took place in Season 1, Episode 21, Tanjiro and co. find themselves slowly becoming properly acquainted with each one as the story progresses. From Giyuu Tomioka, the Water Hashira, and Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashirain Season 1 to Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira, in Demon Slayer: Mugen Train to Tengen Uzui, the Sound Hashira, in Season 2, the Hashiras have a tendency to become fan favorites. Now with the upcoming third season, a poster teases the appearances of Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira, and Mitsuri Kanroji, the Love Hashira who are guaranteed to have their time to shine.
A tweet by the official Demon Slayer English Twitter account confirms that Haruo Sotozaki and Akira Matsushima will be returning as the director and character designer respectively.
Is There a Demon Slayer Season 3 Trailer?
Crunchyroll released an official trailer for the “Swordsmith Village” arc on April 16th, though it feels more like a teaser. About the first minute-and-a-half of this three-minute trailer showcases clips and dialogue of the story so far before branching off into new territory. But even then, fans are only shown a few shots of swordsmiths at work and a quick glance at the Mist and Love Hashiras before closing on Tanjiro drawing his sword with a ferocious battle cry.
While not much is given away in this trailer, the animation remains to be nothing short of spectacular, promising another visually stunning and awe-inspiring season of demon slayer.
